Hand-made bricks, mortar, gravel, Karoo Desert, off Richmond, South Africa
5,75m x 2,5m
I decided to build the work on the third day of my stay at Modern Art Projects South Africa (MAPSA). It originated both in political concerns (Gaza) and in artistic considerations (the obsession with architecture in plastic arts) and its intention was half-denunciatory half-absurdist and ironic. In the event, I fell in love with the work and discovered kinder aspects to it, like the fact that it offers shade.
A Line in the Middle of Nowhere is not a Small Thing, a concise correspondence between Hans Theys and me with regard to the sculpture ‘Karoo Wall/Genius Loci’ was published in South Africa by Modern Art Projects South Africa (2024). You can download it here.
